AJAY GEHI – WORKING WITH THE BEST OF THE BEST

There has got to be something about Ajay Gehi. In the short span that he has called Bollywood home, apart from being the lead in The Good Road, which is India’s entry to the Oscar in 2013, he has worked with directors such as RGV, Vishal Bahardwaj and Mani Ratnam. It almost gives the perception that either the director has to be top notch for Ajay to be involved, or if it is a new comer, like Gyan, the end result/film will become top notch. Here we speak to this amazing actor, on how he makes this happen:
How did The Good Road come your way?
The co producer of the film who is also the DOP, Amitabha Singh knew me from my modeling days. He recommended my name to the director Gyan Correa . We all had an informal meeting and I was offered the film.
Your reaction to its Oscar Nomination?
I knew that this was a small budget film made in a regional language. We hoped that it gets released someday so people can see our work . We never expected anything more. we had only been a part of the film for some creative satisfaction. The film first won the national award and now an entry to the Oscars leaving me speechless and happy .
You have had a chance to work with some of the finest filmmakers in India, Mani Ratnam, Gyan, Vishal, etc, how has each contributed to your growth as an actor?
I’ve been lucky and also proud of my choices . Every director has a different style or approaching and narrating a story. With every experience of mine I’ve got to know different mindsets, different types of preparations and different ways of exploring a role as an actor.
Talk about your upcoming projects?
I’m currently in the process of reading scripts and hope to start a few films by the next year.
Is TV passe or would you balance your life between films and TV, going forward?
TV is vast , it depends what kind of work is offered to me on that medium . For right now I’ll concentrate on films but will be open to newer things on any medium as long as it excites me.
