DHOOM 3 – A WANNABE HOLLYWOOD FILM
Director: Vijay Krishna Acharya
Producer: Aditya Chopra
Screenplay & Story: Vijay Krishna Acharya and Aditya Chopra
Cast: Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra and Katrina Kaif
From an Indian audience perspective we have two kind of films, Bollywood and Hollywood and then we have something in between, which is where DHOOM 3. The stunts, the fact it is filmed in Chicago and deals with a modern take on the great bank robbery , make it a typical Hollywood film, that we see enmasse in the film and DVD world. The fact it has an Indian centric story, albeit lacking in emotional connect, make it a Bollywood film, but in trying to define itself, it lands as a good package, but no gift, combination.
The length of the film, is not befitting that of a thriller, but the stunts definitely are, as are the visuals of the city of Chicago. From a performance perspective, the acting of Aamir, Abhishek , Uday and Katrina is solid, but the holes in the story are glaring, as in why the Indian cops get involved, why does Aamir not kill of Abhishek when he has an opportunity, etc, make it a somewhat flat experience for the viewer.
The music is solid and the visualization of the dances, especially on Aamir and Katrina, are a joy to watch. Humor is the element that Uday gets to the table, and surprisingly underplays it pretty well.
Katrina’s character is not well sketched out and she Is primarily a filler for the songs.
The intensity of the actors, though, is well preserved, through the length of the film.
While for the most part entertaining enough, something about the characters and the film and the story, prevents it from latching on to the audiences.
Overall, lower the expectations and you will not be disappointed and you will be entertained.
