MARDAANI – Nagesh Kukunoor’s Lakshmi Repackaged
Cast: Rani Mukherjee, Tahis Bhasin, Anil George
Director: Pradeep Sarkar
Producer: Yash Raj Films
Mardaani has its moments, it is a departure from the ususal bubble gum candy and is this years attempt to becoming The woman oriented kick ass film. Problem, is it appears to resemble another film released this year, Lakshmi, by Nagesh Kukunoor. But if you discount that fact, it has some fine performances, led by Rani Mukherjee and one of the protagonist, Anil George. What works is that the pace is crisp, the action plenty and the dialogues, playfully sly, between the cop and the suspect, as opposed to the usual over the top banter heard in Bollywood films.
What is undone are the characterizations. Characters move in and out of character, as their length of role increases and there are times when you do get the feeling of one person trying to stay in two characters.
However, just like Pradeep Sarkar did in Kahani, he does bring us the dark side of Delhi and its characters, with a fair degree of authenticity. The interactions between Rani and her team members and then with her family is entertaining and takes the film forward nicely, as opposed to being a speedbraker, to the overall plot.
Use of things like item numbers, songs, etc have been wisely avoided and are not missed either, as the content is enough for the drama to unfold. Nice visuals of both Mumbai and Delhi have been captured well, and reflect the mood of the story.
Overall an entertaining watch, that does appear to have the look of “seen this somewhere before.”
